MUMBAI: In yet another incident that highlights the civic apathy towards hundreds of the city’s open death traps, a 19-year-old girl fell into an unmarked manhole at Kamani, Kurla, on Wednesday.
The girl, who was immediately rescued by unidentified passers-by, escaped death as her friend managed to hold on to her hand just in time. Heavy rains and waterlogging in the vicinity had made it difficult for her to spot the open manhole.
“I slipped on some sand and and fell into the manhole,’’ said Rajvee Gandhi, a student of Jhunjhunwala College.

However, the local police refused to register a case of negligence against the BMC or the contractor. When contacted, an officer of VB Nagar police station said the matter needs to be attended to by the BMC and not the police.
